TOM AULD ART STATEMNT:
On a family vacation in Jamaica over 30 years ago, I was fascinated by the watercolorsthat my brother Stuart, painted. Until then, I had only seen hisfinished pieces, never the process.. I asked if watercolor was hard. He lied and said, ”It's not that hard, here, you try.” He handedme some paper, a brush and some paints and sent me on my way. I've been trying ever since.
Painting was an infrequent activity for me until I retired from a career in advertising and marketing. I took some workshops and eventually joined a small, local, painting group, Sundays @ One. The group wasc oached by Henry Walker, an exceptional watercolor artist. He wascynical by nature but proved to be an excellent teacher and critic. Our group painted together for nearly a decade. Although Henry is nolonger with us, I still hear his voice from time to time,
“No amount of paint will save a bad drawing.”
Painting with watercolors leaves little room for complacency and I find plein airepainting the most challenging. Changing weather, shifting light andshadow, moving subjects, all conspire to confuse. Learning to see and paint shapes and and correct values has been an ongoing challenge.
When I assembled this show, I realized how much of the work came from sea coast or lakeshore scenes. The light quality on the coast is intense and theshadows deep. I'm intrigued by patterns of light and shadow, back litfeatures and intense color. The challenge is to interpret thoseelements in two dimensions.
I must admit, the unpredictability of watercolor is a draw as well. It is essential tobalance mental activity and physical control with the mix of water and color before putting brush to paper. The process alters time passage...always a surprise bonus.
At the age of 80, cellist Pablo Casals was asked why he continued to practice four and five hours a day. “I think I'm making progress.” Like Casals, I too think I am beginning to make some progress.
