Three Days of OilPastel Expressionist Art
Skills & Process: First, begin with dabbling, scumbling lines and dots/dashes. Use lightly/medium hand pressure. Never use tip like crayons- parallel lines. Should be curly cues, pointillism, filling next color on small while areas, and so on. 2) The 3 Color Rule; using side of colors or color block in a saturated way. Will not be layering more than two colors typically. (Thick laying down)
Blending styles: finger, or tissue/paper towel square, or best is blending stump. Never blend entire thing- loose so much. Scraffito (metal, wood tools) Styles etched lightly into layers of pastel color.
Scratch signature.
Basic Oil Pastel Portrait Break in 3Days:
Day One
Teacher Demo, sharing thoughts amongst teams Draw in scumble, dots, scribble technique rather than linear slanted area like crayon coloring-in. Making variety, patterned layer, areas of white make space for new, 2nd and 3rd colors…demo“ooh yeah,” points including, use background while doing the face; unity integration of areas throughout, and contrast details that distinguish this portrait. Go with top 2-3 contrasts for today. Add more distinguishers/focal point mirrors at a later time.
Choose photo, student has theirs prepped ahead of time
Explain the supplies, pass them out
Light use of oval, features in line but all rest is following the demo color blocking
Day Two
Demo basic Skills & Processes a camera may be helpful (set up where?) May use a YouTube video ArtProf for example.
Students practice with the teacher:blending two colors, blending color with white, and the fun Gradient fade to white, or to black Easier to add light color on dark color, than to add dark on light, for a blended look. Try it out.
Quick blocks of scumbled pastel first layer of portrait. Choose wisely based on the photo. Only a few light lines. Apply pastel with curly, scumbling, scribbling type small marks where white (black) paper is seem in between. New color fills in those areas.
Day Three
Avoid black too much or the colors will muddy. Darks look darker because the the other color around (use alizarin crimson mixed with viridian, for example). Black will kill color with pastel. Must address, color block the background at the same time as the portrait. It is ongoing layering, changing along with the face.
Going back to what can be exaggerated,or emphasized for interest, contrasts, textures? Stop when it is too muddy. It is a process, not a masterpiece. Action over noun. Do anew one, do not feel anxious to try to make changes, if it fails, you learned. Can also try modge podge layer over color layer. Can addon top with not more muddying of first layers.
Would like to see when students are finished, if incomplete by end of class- email to SRCA. Permissionto publish on website.
