The Standing Rock Cultural Arts Rock in the River Literary Series is the press portion of our literary sector witha mission to promote literary arts in our general area and to promote local and national poets with publication. The series launched with the Premiere Standing Rock Open Poetry Chapbook Competition in July 2010 and our first title launched in February 2011. The series is currently edited by Tina Puckett. Please see more detailed information about our titles, authors, judges, and competitions below.
We at Standing Rock Cultural Arts and the Rock in the River Literary Series most definitely invite, encourage, and welcome new and experienced talented authors to enter future competitions. Each competition features different guest judges allowing aesthetics and tastes to vary with each competition so that a variety of chapbooks featuring eclectic styles and subjects can come to print. Fees are used to defray expenses of the contest. Any remaining fees benefit our charitable nonprofit arts programming including the literary arts.
PURPOSE: To promote the literary arts in our general area, promote poet/s with publication, and potentially raise funds for SRCA charitable nonprofit arts programming (including poetry readings at Last Exit Books and the New World Children’s Theatre Playwriting Workshops) through any remaining entry fees/gallery sales of winning chapbook.
WHEN: July 15, 2014-October 15, 2014 (electronic by midnight Eastern Standard Time; postmark by Oct 15th)
The winner will be announced electronically in early December and chapbooks will be distributed in early spring (February 1st approximately).

NATASHA RODRIGUEZ-CARROLL is a graduate student in poetry in the NEOMFA consortium and a former Wick Poetry Center Fellow. She has a BA in Spanish from Kent State University. Her poems have appeared in Jenny, Black Feminist Manifesto, Luna Negra, and the Speak Peace Traveling Exhibit. Natasha lives in Kent, Ohio, with her husband and daughter.
CARLA THOMPSON, mother, poet, activist, and educator, believes that the arts are the highest form of self- expression and exploration. Her professional work has centered on helping women and youth find ways to give artistic form to everyday challenges. She has facilitated poetry workshops for social justice, as well as a therapeutic poetic arts program for incarcerated youth. Carla holds a BA in English and a M.Ed. She has been a high school, GED, and adjunct educator and an award-winning journalism instructor. JUDGING CRITERIA – Scoring of 1-10 on the following basic criteria:
*No Hallmark verse (overly sentimental; light, inspirational) or hate poetry; no –isms that promote a negative bias against any class of people (race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, etc.)
*Meaningfulness or uniqueness of collection in today’s world
*Cohesiveness of the manuscript/success of theme if there is an actual theme (strong seam?)
*Vivid and/or innovative use of language and imagery (Have our brains been tickled? Do we see a film of what your words say?)
*Can be playful and experimental or traditional, any style (shorter poems work best due to the format of the book)
*Judges can sometimes be subjective with their tastes and subject matters and differ from year to year so these criteria serve as a basic guideline
TINA PUCKETT is currently an Outreach Teaching Artist with the Wick Poetry Center and is completing her MFA in Poetry at the Northeast Ohio MFA consortium. Poems must be based primarily in the English language; no translations permitted without appropriate obtained permissions
No previously published manuscripts as a whole – individual poems can be published and must be acknowledged in a separate Acknowledgments page file. Permission for re-publication from previous publisher must be obtained (or first rights for author must have been retained).
PLEASE NOTE: We enjoy promoting fresh and original manuscripts, ours and other presses. For that reason, we prefer that no more than 25% of the manuscript content be previously published in another individual chapbook, full-length book, or single anthology (no journal limits) and acknowledgment of each poem published by a previous press must appear on submitted Acknowledgments page.
Simultaneous submissions are accepted and entrant is required to notify competition immediately if submission is accepted elsewhere. There are no refunds on entry fee however. Multiple entries can be entered for a fee of $9 per manuscript.
Collaborative projects are permitted and the entry fee remains the same. If chosen as a winner, prize is divided (see tie protocol). If not selected, only one free chapbook is provided to the collaborative parties. A second copy can be obtained at a discount if requested via email.
Upload each manuscript and payment as one submission via Submittable in $9 competition category. Contact information may appear in the cover letter area but not within the submission itself.
Return to original categories and submit entry form and acknowledgments separately in the entry form category (free of charge).
You will receive auto-confirmation for each of these entries via email.
PLEASE NOTE: These steps are important for the integrity of the competition. Any manuscripts displaying identifying information (acknowledgments, contact info, name) will be disqualified without refund of the entry fee! We do attempt to notify of any entry issues prior to judges' viewing and any disqualification.

Electronic entries will receive email confirmation of manuscript receipt and notification of winner.
All mailed entries should contain a self-addressed stamped post card if verification of receipt is wanted. No late entries will receive response. All manuscripts will be recycled after final judging. A SASE for final results should be sent only if there is no email contact address. Otherwise, results will be sent via email. Email is preferred and will not be spammed, shared, or sold and will only be used for purposes of this year’s competition notifications.
Finished product will be a 5.5 x 8.5 chapbook printed on 24# paper stock with a card stock cover, saddle stitch stapled. SRCA reserves the right to change this format to perfect-bound similar-sized creation or to change size of books and binding if necessary for rare poetry formats.
Cover sheet, acknowledgments page, contents, author photo, and author bio will be published. Chapbook may also include a brief synopsis of contest including short bio about each judge and editor & a brief overview of SRCA. In the case of a competition sponsor, sponsor may be tastefully acknowledged within the book.
RIGHTS & DISCLOSURES:
SRCA will reserve rights to print/reprint chapbook for SRCA stock only one year (initial SRCA stock is approximately 75-100 chapbooks) and to sell chapbook until that stock is exhausted. SRCA maintains rights to reprint chapbook for author at author’s request after one year.
All first publication rights to the individual poems will return to the author(s).
Author also has the right to reprint subsequent copies (at author’s expense). SRCA does offer deep discount off sale price to the author for production of additional books if the author wishes SRCA to handle the reprints. Quality and content of the original must be maintained (or changes must be agreed upon with the editor) for the integrity of the press.
Additional rights to SRCA are the ability to receive all profits from sale of chapbook stock other than author’s initial copies or author’s subsequent self-paid copies, from which author may likewise profit free and clear from SRCA. No additional revenue aside from initial 25 copies and initial cash prize will be received by author from SRCA for stock sold by SRCA nor by SRCA from author for stock sold through direct sales with the author. Author can order reprints at any time and after the one year expiration for SRCA stock runs. Sales will be redirected to website of author's choice after initial SRCA stock is exhausted (No profit from the author’s choice of website will be due to SRCA unless sales are maintained on SRCA website).
Due to the nature of our nonprofit arts organization, limited space, and low number of unpaid volunteer staff, we are currently unable to handle consignments but are happy to provide author-prepaid reprints at a deep discount and to ship to requested locations/vendors for orders of 12 or more books. Up to five review copies will also be sent free of charge to potential reviewers as requested. As a trade-off, detailed attention is happily given to the publication of the winning title and support of the winner each year.
We greatly appreciate that no more than 25% of winning chapbook's contents appear in a subsequent chapbook with another press (full-length books not applicable). Acknowledgment of any content that has been published with SRCA is expected (can be either by individual poem or a brief statement to the effect that "Some content appeared in a previous chapbook, (Title), winner of the 2014 Rock in the River Literary Series Competition with Standing Rock Cultural Arts" at the discretion of the subsequent press and editor.
Standing Rock Cultural Arts staff will not be responsible for any loss or damage during submission process. Submittable promptly remedies online submission issues and we are happy to assist with this process as needed. Submitting an entry to this competition constitutes an understanding and agreement with all conditions. Entries will be recycled upon judging completion. Please do not send any originals!
Standing Rock Cultural Arts additionally reserves the right to disqualify any entry that does not follow the guidelines provided above. Please contact us via email with any questions.
Standing Rock Cultural Arts assumes the right to use quoted lines of poetry from the winning chapbook in promotional materials. Any quotes used will be credited to the poet(s).
**INELIGIBLE TO ENTER: No current staff, board members, interns, or routine volunteers of SRCA (defined as volunteering on a consistent monthly basis or on a basis of more than 6 months a year) nor the current judges will be permitted to enter in order to protect the integrity of the competition. Judges must notify editor of any potential bias, such as recognition of work that may reflect a conflict of interest between judge and submitter, during the judging process (other judge or staff will review). Former and current students and all known relatives of the judges are ineligible to enter. In 2014, NEOMFA students are ineligible to enter due to judge affiliations. “Opt-out” can be marked on the response sheet to prevent scoring issues upon final score tallies and remaining judge score average will be used. Previous winners are ineligible to enter until they have been out of the competition for two competition cycles.

ABOUT OUR 2014 WINNER Elizabeth Kerlikowske is the winner of the 2010 Dunes Review Shaw Prize and also of a (Kalamazoo) Community Literary Award for Poetry. Her work has appeared in the journals SLAB, The Ambassador Project, New Verse News, Cincinnati Review, Passager, Poemeleon, Off the Coast, and recent anthologies, The Disenfranchised and Solace. She is also the author of six books of poetry and prose including Rib (Pudding House Press, 2010) and the one she most enjoyed writing, The Shape of Dad (March Street Press, 2005).
Elizabeth earned her MA from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and her PhD from Western Michigan University. She has taught at Kellogg Community College in Battle Creek, Michigan for 18 years.
In addition, she is the president of Friends of Poetry, a 37 year old nonprofit dedicated to poetry. Friends of Poetry sponsors a yearly reading series, as well as an annual contest for student writers, and collaborates with other small arts organizations in the area.
Elizabeth is a Michigan native, and her work is subsequently infused with forests and lakes. She is the mother of three children who are all great Scrabble players. They are her greatest pride.
ABOUT OUR CURRENT VOLUNTEER GUEST JUDGES Melissa Barrett is the recipient of an Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award, a Tin House writer’s scholarship, an Oboh Prize, a Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Prize, and the Koppenhaver Prize from Wittenberg University. Rick Marlatt’s newest collection opens with this take on modern society in a multidimensional dreamlike void where myth meets math, theology meets technology, and spirituality meets the stagnation of a world saturated in electronic static. Like any intriguing and complex dream, Marlatt’s multi-layered collection is woven together through an impressive number of binding threads that lead the reader through a fascinating loop of reflections on everything from ancestral roots, spirituality, myth, and the natural world to the psyche, tension, and the fatigued technological hangover of a desolate decade of “connected” disconnect.

Rick Marlatt’s first book, How We Fall Apart, was chosen as the winner of the 2010 Seven Circle Press Poetry Award. Rick is a graduate of the MFA program at the University of California, Riverside, where he served as poetry editor of the Coachella Review. Previously, he studied English and Philosophy at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where he also earned a MA in Creative Writing, and he is currently a PhD student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

ABOUT OUR 2011 WINNER: KELLY FORDON
At the start of the 2011 competition, Kelly Fordon had just finished work on her first novel. Prior to writing fiction and poetry, she worked at the NPR member station in Detroit and for National Geographic magazine. Kelly’s work has appeared in The Kenyon Review (KRO), Flashquake, Red Wheelbarrow, The Windsor Review, The Bear River Review, Voices in Wartime and various other journals. Kelly has also received honors with a third place win in the Kathryn Handley Prose Poem Contest and as a finalist in the 38th Annual Mississippi Valley Poetry Contest. In Lake and Other Poems of Love in a Foreign Land, Jeff Fearnside uses his delicately detailed, socially relevant, emotionally moving poems and their rich imagery to lead us through the enlightening—sometimes harrowing—travels of life in another land, where nearly nothing is what has been known to the newcomer speaker.

ABOUT OUR 2010 WINNER: JEFF FEARNSIDE
Jeff Fearnside lived and worked in Central Asia for four years, first as a university instructor through the U.S. Peace Corps and later as manager of the Muskie Graduate Fellowship Program in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
His creative work has appeared in more than two dozen national publications in the U.S., including poetry in Assisi, Blue Earth Review, and The Los Angeles Review; nonfiction in The Sun, Etude, and the anthology A Life Inspired: Tales of Peace Corps Service; and fiction in Rosebud, Crab Orchard Review, and as Featured Winner of the 2005 Flash Fiction Contest in Many Mountains Moving.
A selection from his short-story manuscript, Making Love While Levitating Three Feet in the Air, was chosen as Grand Prize Winner in the Santa Fe Writers Project 2005 Literary Awards Program, while the entire manuscript was named a finalist (Top 7) in the New Rivers Press 2009 MVP Competition. In addition, Fearnside’s fiction has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize.
Other awards for his writing have included fellowships at both the Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest in Clermont, Kentucky, and the Mary Anderson Center for the Arts in Mount St. Francis, Indiana. ABOUT OUR PREVIOUS VOLUNTEER GUEST JUDGES Lynne Albert (Guest Blind Judge) served as Assistant Editor of the literary magazine The Lighter at Valparaiso University. Her work has appeared in literary magazines at Valparaiso, the University of Findlay, and Ursuline College, as well as anthologies such as Vending Machine: Poetry for Change and Hessler Street Poetry. Lynne’s creative focus includes raising awareness about mental illness and homelessness. Her newest compilation, entitled Her Haunted Hazel Eyes Contradict Her Smile, debuted this winter.
Melissa Barrett (Guest Blind Judge, 2013)
Colleen Clayton (Guest Blind Judge, 2011) holds an MFA from the NEOMFA. In addition to writing contemporary young adult fiction, she has published short stories and poetry in Ruminate Magazine, Rubbertop Review, The Road Not Taken, Gloom Cupboard, and many other literary journals. When she isn't writing, she is teaching writing at Youngstown State University. Her first novel, WHAT HAPPENS NEXT, was published in October 2012 by Little, Brown and Company.
John Dorsey (Guest Blind Judge) is the author of several collections of poetry, including harvey keitel, harvey keitel, harvey keitel, with S.A. Griffin and Scott Wannberg (Butcher Shop Press/Rose of Sharon Press/Temple of Man, 2005), Teaching the Dead to Sing: The Outlaw's Prayer (Rose of Sharon Press, 2006), and Sodomy is a City in New Jersey (American Mettle Books, 2010). T.M. Göttl (Guest Blind Judge, 2010) is a member of the Buffalo ZEF creative community and has served as vice president of the Ohio Poetry Association. Her work has appeared in Pudding Magazine, Verse Wisconsin, Common Threads, The Hessler Street Fair Poetry Anthology, Opium Press, The Poet’s Haven, Deep Cleveland, The Mill, Waynessence, and others, as well as on 91.3 WAPS The Summit and 89.7 WOSU radio, both in Ohio. Her first full-length collection, Stretching the Window, was published in 2008. She can be found online at www.buffalozef.net.
Allen Michael Hines (Guest Blind Judge) was the winner of a 2007 Stan and Tom Wick poetry scholarship and is currently a writer and researcher for the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador. His chapbook Screaming Freedom was published in 2009. Allen’s poetry has appeared in several publications and is forthcoming in an anthology from BlazeVOX.
Andrew Rihn (Guest Blind Judge, 2010) is the author of several slim volumes of poetry, including the chapbooks The Rust Belt MRI (Pudding House), America Plops and Fizzes (sunnyoutside press), and Foreclosure Dogs (Winged City Press). Andrew was the 2008 First Place Stan and Tom Wick Undergraduate Poetry Competition winner and runner-up in the 2009 Working Peoples' Poetry Competition. He has run poetry workshops at both Kent State University at Stark and a domestic violence shelter. He can be found online at his blog Midwestern Sex Talk.
Gina Tabasso (Guest Blind Judge, 2011) holds a master’s degree in English; has been published in many international literary journals and anthologies; and has three chapbooks (From Between My Legs, Disrobing and Front Lines). She earns her living in marketing communications and as an adjunct English instructor. She enjoys practicing yoga, watching films, reading, and spending time with her horse and those she loves.

HOW ARE ENTRY FEES USED/WHY ARE THERE ENTRY FEES? & OTHER MISCELLANEOUS INFO
The proceeds received from each competition’s entry fees (currently $9 per submission) defray the expenses of our poetry chapbook competitions and benefit our arts programming, which includes recurring poetry readings and our goals for poetry enrichment. The author of the winning chapbook receives a cash prize and copies of the chapbook with rights for reprint, as well as author sales at the author’s desire and expense with no fees or commission due to SRCA. SRCA also retains rights to reprint and sell chapbooks with no additional revenue to the author. All rights to the individual poems revert to the author upon publication. SRCA currently turns sales and accompanying profits over to authors after initial stock from publication year is exhausted. Please note that our editor, guest judges, and staff are unpaid volunteers in a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
